At then the monument was heavily damaged because villagers used it as washboard since they didn't recognize the importance of the epitaph at then. About 2,000 words were engraved on each side of this rectangular monolith similiar to that of King Gwanggaeto's monument. It indicates the boundary of Goguryeo and shows the capital of Paekche, Hansung was collasped by Goguryeo's military attack. Although scholars were so far able to read only one-tenth of the inscriptions, Jungwon-Goguryeo-bi provides invaluable information about how the empire ruled its territories at then.
